Around 15.8 million Indonesians are expected to come back to their homeland to celebrate Islamic festival this year, a rise of 16.4 percent compared with last year, Transport Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal said Wednesday.
Muslims in the biggest Muslim country prefer to celebrate the festival, after performing the holy month of Ramadhan, in their homeland or their birth place. For this year, the festival is to be celebrated on Oct. 1-2.
The minister said that most of the people would prefer land transport, followed by air and water transports.
Over 43,700 policemen would be dispatched to secure the journey, Brig. General Edhi Susilo, head of operation of the National Police, was quoted by the Detik online as saying Wednesday.
In Indonesia, which has a population of 230 million, 87 percent are Muslims.
