Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kachornprasart suggested Saturday that Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej lift the state of emergency quickly in order to reduce confrontation between the government and the anti-government group, according to the Thai News Agency.

Sanan, speaking on the eve of his 74th birthday, said that the emergency decree not only has a negative effect on tourism, but it should also be lifted to ease confrontation.

He also said the government will have to follow the result of the public referendum whether the people want the government to quit or want the parliament be dissolved, because the plan is proposed by the government itself.

He expressed optimism that the crisis will ease in the near future.

Thailand's Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej declared a state of emergency in the country's capital Bangkok on Tuesday and gave the army control of public order after a man died in overnight clashes between pro- and anti-government protesters.
