Ichiro Ozawa, current president of Japan's major opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), was reelected Monday for a third term.
Ozawa's reelection came in the wake of Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda's surprise resignation announcement on September 1, which has raised the possibility that the ruling bloc of the Liberal Democratic Party and the New Komeito party, may seek a snap election under a more popular leader.
Ozawa, 66, became the chief of the DPJ in April 2006 when Seiji Maehara stepped down over a faked e-mail message scandal. He was elected as president of the DPJ in September 2006 after serving out Maehara's term.
The DPJ, formed through the merger of four political parties in1996, is now standing an increased chance of taking power as it assumed dominance in the House of Councillors last year. Source:Xinhua
