Children engaged in hazardous labor in Bangladesh to get compensation

Families of some 30,000 children engaged in hazardous labor in Bangladesh will receive cash compensation as part of the government's initiative to eliminate hazardous child labor in the country, leading newspaper The Daily Star reported Monday.

Under the government's Hazardous Child Labor Elimination Project, a total of 300 million taka (about 4.3 million U.S. dollars) will be distributed to the families of 30,000 children.

Some 30,000 families across the country will receive 10,000 taka(about 142.9 U.S. dollars) each.

This was announced by Labour and Employment Adviser Mohammad Anwarul Iqbal of the Bangladesh caretaker government at a meeting here on Sunday.

Under the project, the students have been providing with non-formal education. They will be also provided with skilled development training.

Some 1.3 million child workers, out of 7.4 million, at the age of 5-17 in Bangladesh are involved in various hazardous work, according to a survey conducted by International Labor Organization in 2003.
