A total of 24 fire broke out in Myanmar in August, destroying 177 houses and leaving 1,105 people homeless, the state-run newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported Wednesday.
Of the fire, 66 percent were caused by negligence or started in the kitchen, while the others were due to short-circuit and arson.
Most of the fire broke out in Yangon but the property loss due to fire was higher in the southern Tanintharyi division, the report said.
Myanmar suffered most from the natural disaster of fire compared to others, registering over 900 fire cases annually in the past decade.
The months of March, April and May are Myanmar's summer season which are sensitive to fire occurrence.
In view of the fact that fire even broke out in the rainy season like July and August, the Fire Service Department has stepped up efforts for fire prevention, the report added.
