The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will form an "Emirates National Web" to keep track of earthquakes in the Gulf country after being shaken by a strong earthquake that struck southern Iran on Wednesday, local Khaleej Times reported on Friday.
All earthquake-monitoring centers planned for different parts of the UAE will be equipped with advanced technologies operating to international standard, according to a statement by the UAE National Center of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS).
The centers will also monitor tremors in neighboring regions, especially since many of the seismic activities that the UAE experiences are relayed from activities along Iran's Zagros Mountains where the Arabian tectonic plate meets the European and Asian plates.
The earthquake on Wednesday occurred in the same region, between Iran's southern port city of Bandar Khamir and Qeshm Island.
The earthquake, which was of 6.1 magnitude on the Richter scale, caused a wave of panic in the UAE. In several emirates, people ran out of their offices and houses when they felt the tremors.
The official Emirates News Agency said on Thursday that the seismic network stations across the UAE detected 17 tremors in the aftershocks of the earthquake, adding that the seismic activity does not pose any danger on the country. Source:Xinhua
