Malaysian police sent seven officers and nine personnel of other ranks on a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission to Darfur, Sudan on Monday.
The team led by Azmi Wahid, left Kuala Lumpur International Airport on a Qatar Airlines flight. They would be in Darfur for a year.
Besides families and friends, Royal Malaysia Police Management Deputy Director (Administration) Zaleha Abdul Rahman was at the airport to bid them farewell.
Azmi, 42, told reporters earlier that the team's mission was more of committee policing rather than maintaining security.
"Many people misunderstood the meaning of peacekeeping mission as they thought we would be maintaining order using arms. Actually, our job is more of collecting information for the UN so that the world body get a clearer picture of the situation in Darfur," the national news agency Bernama quoted Azmi as saying.
The team would work together with their counterparts from other countries, he said.
Malaysian police's first team comprising 26 people left in June.
