Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Monday advised Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Zaid Ibrahim to take a leave and rethink his decision to quit the post, local media reported on Monday.

Badawi said that Zaid met him at his official residence in Putrajaya, the administrative center of the federal government, Monday afternoon and conveyed his intention to quit the post, according to Malaysia's national news agency Bernama.

Badawi said that he told Zaid to "think carefully", Bernama said.

Badawi currently was at Kuala Terengganu, capital of Malaysia's northern state of Terengganu.

Zaid reportedly tendered his resignation letter to the Prime Minister's Office Monday afternoon. Local televisions reported that Badawi needed time to handle the matter.

Zaid said on Sunday that he was prepared to be sacked or ordered to quit for speaking out against the government's use of the Internal Security Act (ISA).

Zaid said that the act should be used specifically to stem the activities of terrorists and those attempting to topple the government by force, according to Bernama.

In another development, Badawi also dismissed the opposition's plan to set up a new government on Tuesday as ridiculous.

He said that the formation of a new government as bandied about by opposition party leader Anwar Ibrahim would not happen on Tuesday, according to Bernama.
