Afghanistan's Interior Ministry has sought the cooperation of citizens in an effort to ensure the security of the country's capital Kabul, spokesman of the ministry Zamarai Bashari said Tuesday.
"The initiative of this project is to enhance the cooperation between police and people in each precincts and streets of the city in order to control criminal and terrorist activities," Bashari said at a press conference.
Titled "Supporters of Peace Guards", the project would enable Kabul residents to contact police if any one with suspicious activities is seen, Bashari said.
The U.S.-style neighborhood watch system would facilitate police to foil terrorist designs and strengthen the security in the Afghan capital, the official said.
However, he added those hired by police under the newly launched project should go under scrutiny and government would provide them necessary equipment such as mobile phone to contact police when needed.
Kabul has experienced several deadly terrorist attacks over the past two years and the recent one targeting the Indian embassy in last July, which left over 41 dead and 140 others injured.
The project has been launched in the wake of Afghan security forces taking over security affairs of Kabul since late last August.
If the newly launched project proves successful in the capital city, it would be popularized in other provinces in future, Bashari further said.
To support this program, Afghan Interior Ministry and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) inked an agreement in Kabul last Thursday.
