Though Nepal Army and police began rescue operation in the flood-hit areas in Kailali district in far-western Nepal on Monday, thousands of people were still locked up in their houses in some villages because of inundation following incessant rain since Friday, local media reported on Tuesday.
According to The Himalayan Times daily, a rescue team of Nepal Army said it rescued 200 persons and took them to different temporary camps by the evening.
"Elders, children and patients from Thapapur and Lalbojhi Village Development Committees (VDC) were rescued by helicopters," Shanker Pandit, battalion commander of Nepal Army's Barakh Battalion, said.
But locals said only helicopters could rescue the marooned villagers.
"At least 400 villagers have been confined to their houses in Thapapur VDC alone," a local of Thapapur village said.
"I had informed the district chapter of Nepal Red Cross Society and district police office about inundation in our village. But the Nepal Army chopper came for rescue only after three days," he said.
Naine BK of Bardaphanta in Thapapur VDC asked the authorities concerned to first rescue the affected and distribute relief later."At least 200 people in my localities are awaiting rescue. Though adults can swim to safer places, they cannot leave back their family members stranded," he added.
He also said that most of the villagers were taking refuge on rooftops to save their children from drowning.
According to the report, apart from the army chopper, another private chopper has also been deployed for rescue and relief operation.
Meanwhile, Labor Minister Lekh Raj Bhatta and 15 Constituent Assembly members of the far-western region made an aerial inspection of the flood-hit areas in Kailali and Kanchanpur districts on Monday. Source:Xinhua
