Leaders of the major three Nepali political parties have disagreed with each other on the form of republic the future Nepal would embrace through the new constitution, which is to be drafted by the Constituent Assembly (CA), The Rising Nepal reported on Friday.
The first CA meeting on May 28 declared Nepal a federal democratic republic, and the CA is to draft a new constitution for the republic in around two years.
Leaders from the top CA parties opined their thoughts at an interaction in Nepali capital Kathmandu on Wednesday.
C.P. Gajurel, senior leader from the single largest CA party, the Communist party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M), said his party was in favor of the people's republic.
Minendra Rijal from Nepali Congress (NC), the second largest CA party and the opposition party, said the NC was in favor of a federal democratic republic.
The third largest CA party in the coalition government, the Communist party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML) was in favor of people's multiparty democracy, CPN-UML leader Bhim Rawal said.
Gajurel said serious discussions should begin now on federal democratic republic as it was insufficient for the country.
Saying that NC's priority was to write a democratic constitution and not the power, Rijal accused the CPN-M of shifting focus on capturing the state power rather than writing a constitution for which they were mandated to lead the government, according to the report.
