Thailand's Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat said on Friday the public would be the main opinion to amend the charter while the government would not intervene.
Somchai, who was newly elected as Thailand's 26th Prime Minister, said the government would like to see more of the participation from general public to voice their opinions in law amendments.
He said a charter drafting assembly will be set up to overlook the amendment.
The premier reiterated that the amendment is for the general public, not any particular groups because part of those who will join the drafting committee will come from people's selection.
Charter amendment is the main controversial issue between the pro- and anti- government groups during the political turmoil last three months. The anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) which has seized the Government House since late August always say the charter amendment will only benefits the former Premier Thaksin Shinawatra, Somchai's brother-in-law, and his political parties.
