Suspected insurgents opened fire at patrol soldiers in Thailand's far southern province Pattani Saturday morning, killing two soldiers, media here reported.
A unit of six soldiers were patrolling on a local road when an unknown number of suspected insurgents launched the attack at around 6:00 a.m. Saturday (23OOGMT, Friday), according to a report by Bangkok Post website.
The two sides then exchanged fires before insurgents fled the scene, the report said.
Insurgent violence in Thailand's three southernmost provinces --Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala have killed over 3,500 people in the region since its resurrection in January 2004.
