Before the court on Monday, Thailand's anti-government leader Chamlong Srimuang who was arrested on Sunday denies his insurrection charge and clarified the operation of seizing the Government House by his People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) was to protest the government's move to amend the constitution.
The former Bangkok Governor said the PAD wanted the coalition government led by the People Power Party (PPP) to step down because its intention of rewriting the charter was to benefit some group of people.
Chamlong further accused the government of Prime Minister and Defence Minister Somchai Wongsawat of acting as a proxy for ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra. "The government is corrupted, and therefore his charge of insurrection is completely untrue," the PAD leader was quoted by the Bangkok Post's web news as saying.
Chamlong, one of the nine leaders of the PAD, has launched sustaining anti-government protests since May. On Aug. 26, thousands of PAD members broke into the Government House and started anti-government demonstration inside the country's administrative headquarters till now.
On Sunday morning, after casting his vote for Bangkok Governor election, Chamlong was detained by the police.
