South Korea and Japan agreed on Thursday that the two sides will closely cooperate in resolving the nuclear issues on the Korean Peninsula and promoting bilateral relations, South Korean Foreign Ministry Spokesman Moon Tae-young said.

According to the spokesman, the two sides made the agreement when new Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone made an introductory phone call to his South Korean counterpart Yu Myung-hwan.

Moon said Yu plans to hold one-on-one foreign ministerial talks with other member states on the sidelines of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue in Kazakhstan next week.
