The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA)made an urgent appeal for Arab funds to aid some 30,000 Palestinian refugees whose homes were destroyed by fighting last year at the Nahr Al Bared camp in northern Lebanon, local daily The Jordan Times reported Thursday.
Commissioner-General of UNRWA Karen Abu-Zayd called on "Arab donors to help UNRWA respond adequately to the humanitarian needs of these refugees who have endured more than their fair share of misery and displacement," according to an UNRWA statement to local press.
According to Abu-Zayd, her organization was facing a shortfall of 80 million dollars from its regular budget, in part because of the rising cost of fuel which had "hit UNRWA hard."
UNRWA officials said if funds do not come in soon, essential emergency programs will be severely reduced as some 2.5 million dollars is needed every month for basic emergency assistance.
Abu-Zayd said previously in Vienna that of the 57.8 million dollars so far pledged for the rebuilding of Nahr Al Bared, 91 percent was from Western governments.
"I hope I will soon learn of Arab government pledges, widely anticipated - and essential - if this project is to go ahead as planned."
