A Tamil Tiger suicide bomber blew up himself targeting a minister, killing one person and injuring five others in a Sri Lankan capital suburb on Thursday afternoon, military officials said.

Officials from Defense of Ministry said the Minister of Agricultural Development and Agrarian Services Development Maithripala Sirisena narrowly escaped from an LTTE Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) assassination attempt.

The LTTE suicide bomber blew up himself targeting Sirisena at Privena Junction, Boralasgamuwa at 1:15 p.m. local Time (0745 GMT).

The Deputy Minister Sripala Gamlath was among the injured.

This was the second suicide blast in Sri Lanka within one week.

An explosion carried out by a suicide bomber of LTTE in the north central district of Anuradhapura on Monday killed 29 people including a former Chief of Staff of the Army and injured more than 90 others.

These explosions came as the security forces advanced into the heart land of the LTTE in the north with the aim of totally crushing the organization within one year.

Claiming discrimination at the hands of Sinhalese-dominated governments, the LTTE has been fighting for more than two decades to carve out an independent homeland for Tamil minorities in the north and east, resulting in the killing of more than 70,000 people.
