Samoa is to house the first ever climate change training facility in the Pacific, the Pacnews reported on Wednesday.
Samoan Environment Minister Faumuina Tiatia Liuga told the Pacific delegates at the Pacific Climate Change Roundtable that his government has offered a 60-acre land to build this proposed facility. The Roundtable meeting is being held in Apia, the capital of Samoa.
This climate change hub will be established in Samoa, near the Secretariat of the Pacific Environment Program (SPREP). The hub facility will also house the United Nations family organizations, he said.
He said the climate change hub will be of immense importance to the region and urged the regional delegates to support the initiative.
"It will be a global facility for research and development, training and sharing of information on climate change, right here in the Pacific," said Faumuina.
In Samoa, climate change has been mainstreamed into its national policies.
"We are working to see the linkages between climate change, health and agriculture," he added.
