Rocket attack kills 1, injures 5 civilians in S Afghanistan

Taliban militants who kept mounting pressure on Lashkar Gha city, capital of southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, launched rockets attack on the capital city on Thursday leaving at least one civilian dead and five others wounded, said an official.

Daud Ahmadi, the provincial spokesman told Xinhua that it happened at around 3 p.m. local time (1030 GMT) when rockets fired by Taliban militants from southern part of Lashkar Gha city hit one civilian residence, killing one and injuring five others including a woman.

However, Taliban militants have yet to make any comment.

The unrest southern Afghan province of Helmand has seen the surge and attacks of Taliban militants over the past week as over 118 militants were killed during the clashes.

Spiraling conflicts and Taliban-linked insurgency have left more than 4,500 people with more than 1,500 civilians so far this year in Afghanistan while Taliban insurgents recently vowed to intensified assaults against interests of Afghan government and international troops before the coming winter.
