Tokyo stocks nose-dived Monday, with the key Nikkei index closing at its lowest level in 26 years.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 486.18 points, or 6.36 percent, from Friday to 7,162.90, marking its lowest close since October 1982.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 59.65 points, or 7.40 percent, to 746.46, dragged down by banking and other financial issues that heavily influence the Topix.
