A Jakarta court on Wednesday sentenced former governor of Indonesian central bank Burhanuddin Abdullah to five years imprisonment for corruption charges.
Indonesia, which is struggling to improve investment climate, has been seriously combating rampant corruption in the country.
According to the panel judge, Abdullah is found guilty along with other top officials of the bank for violating the law by disbursing 31.5 billion rupiah (about 3.4 million U.S. dollars) funds several years ago from the bank's foundation to several legislators, allegedly aimed at having a new central bank law passed.
"The court states that Burhanuddin Abdullah is proven guilty along with others (governors and council members) implicated in corruption case," said proceeding judge Dus Rizal.
"The court sentences Burhanuddin Abdullah to five years," he said.
Abdullah and lawyers said that they rejected the decision.
"I am not satisfied with the decision and I will appeal," he said.
Defendant's lawyer Mohammad Assegaf said that should the case be categorized as corruption, all the member of governor board should be charged.
Abdullah was arrested in April by the country's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) following weeks of investigation into his graft allegation.
