An Indonesian court on Thursday sentenced chairman of Islamic hardliner group of the Islamic Defender front or FPI Rizieg Shihab to one year and six months in jail for provocation and spreading hostility toward one or more society groups.
The Central Jakarta district court said that Rizieq was responsible for his group attacks on interfaith activists from National Alliance for the Freedom of Faith and Religion (AKKBB) when they were rallying at Monas park on June 1.
The rally was aimed at supporting Jamaah Ahmadiyah, a minority Islamic sect recently dubbed "heretical" by a government panel.
Judge Panusunan Harahap of the district court had said that Rizieq was found guilty of ordering several FPI's members to wage war against the Ahmadiyah.
Over 500 policemen were initially deployed to prevent a clash between hundreds of supporters of Rizieg with interfaith activists during the session. Source:Xinhua
