The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Friday launched a preliminary appeal for 9 million Swiss francs (about 7.8 million U.S. dollars) to help earthquake victims in Pakistan.
"The funds will enable the ICRC and the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) to step up their emergency assistance operations," the Geneva-based humanitarian agency said in a statement.
The powerful earthquake jolted south-western Pakistan on Wednesday. The death toll in the most affected areas of Baluchistan province is estimated at over 200, according to the statement.
The number of wounded remains unclear, but the ICRC estimates that the quake affected 20,000 to 30,000 people.
"Our priority will be to provide shelter as winter sets in," the ICRC said. Source:Xinhua
