A Sri Lankan woman carrying explosives from the north to the capital Colombo has been arrested in the north, police said Tuesday.
The woman was arrested with 500 grams of C4 explosives at the Irattaperiyakulam security checkpoint in the northern district of Vavuniya Monday night, police spokesman Ranjith Gunasekera said.
The arrest followed information received from the capital Colombo and she was believed to have couriered explosives from the north to the south several times, police said.
The explosives were found hidden in a false bottom in her luggage, police added.
A Tamil Tiger woman suicide bomber was blamed on the failed attempt to assassinate the senior government minister Maithripala Sirisena in Colombo last month.
Police said the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has widely used women suicide cadres on assassination missions in Colombo and elsewhere in the island.
The government has imposed tighter security measures in the country as government troops and the LTTE fight a fierce battle in the north.
