Thailand's Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat said Wednesday that Thailand is ready to host the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in December at a venue in the country's northern province of Chiang Mai instead of Bangkok, in order to avoid possible security problems from the political strife centered in Bangkok.
Due to differences of ideas in politics, Somchai said, "we decided to move the meeting venue from the capital city of Bangkok to the northern province of Chiang Mai which is ready in terms of traveling, accommodation, and providing security."
During the ASEAN summit, the government will declare public holidays for schools to relieve traffic congestion.
Somchai asked all Thais to be good hosts and to refrain from any action that will lead to conflict during the meeting, which will be watched by the world. The success of the meeting will also create confidence in Thailand among the world community, he added.
The ASEAN summit is scheduled to take place Dec. 15-18. The ten ASEAN member states are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Source:Xinhua
