Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Wednesday congratulated Barack Obama on his election as the next U.S. president.

Lee said in a statement that the world needed strong U.S. leadership to overcome the deepening economic crisis and conclude the Doha Round of trade negotiations, as well as achieve an international agreement on climate change and defeat terrorism.

Lee also encouraged Obama to forge strong ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), because "an ASEAN with strong ties to the United States will help to keep the peace in the Asia Pacific."

Lee said he looks forward to welcoming Obama when Singapore hosts the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders Meeting next year.

In a separate letter to Senator Biden, Lee said he admired Biden's spirited campaign and was moved by his personal story of overcoming adversity.

He noted that both Singapore and the United States enjoyed excellent relations and shared common perspectives on many international issues.
