Former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina returned home Thursday morning from the United States after 5 months' treatment.

Hasina, who is also the chief of former ruling Awami League, was arrested in July last year on a corruption charge and was released on parole in June this year for treatment of her damaged ears and eyes abroad.

Hasina returned home after she obtained bail in all the cases which were filed against her, paying the way for her to lead Awami League to the parliamentary election slated for Dec. 18.

The current caretaker government led by Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed launched a massive drive against corruption since taking power on Jan. 12, 2007. Around 200 former government ministers, MPs, including two former prime ministers Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina, were arrested under this drive.

Former prime minister and also former ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party chief Khaleda Zia was released on bail in September this year.
