The Sri Lankan government on Monday rejected the idea of entering a truce with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels.
"We will not enter any cease-fires with the LTTE. We can't trust them", senior Minister Maithripala Sirisena told the country's parliament in response to a query from opposition.
The LTTE's Head of the Political Wing P Nadesan had told a pro-rebel website TamilNet that his group was ready to enter a truce.
"We will go to any talks with them only after they had laid down arms. Out troops have shown its capability to defeat them", Sirisena said.
Since stepping up its military offensive against the rebels in 2006 the troops have made significant gains in the battlefield over rebels.
More than 70,000 people have been killed in the country's long drawn out separatist war.
