Malaysia has set up a special task force to handle outstanding applications by foreigners for permanent resident status in the country, a local newspaper reported on Tuesday.
Malaysian Home Minister Syed Hamid said that his ministry had 5,800 outstanding applications of such to handle to allow foreigners to stay in Malaysia longer, according to The Star.
Under the "spouse program", foreigners married to Malaysians could be issued with multiple entry visas for five years before the Government could consider giving them permanent residency, he said.
After 12 years, they could apply for citizenship, he added.
Foreign men married to Malaysian women can be considered for permanent residency after 10 years, he said.
Syed Hamid noted that his ministry needs to speed up checks on related information before it can make any decision.
