Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin Wednesday announced resignation after the country's graft buster found him guilty of in a fire engine truck government procurement case.
The National Counter-Corruption Commission (NCCC) ruled against him on Tuesday because he signed the 6.7-billion-baht (191.4 million U.S. dollars) contract with an Austrian firm, which was against the Cabinet's resolutions and opposing opinions.
Aprirak told a press conference on Wednesday afternoon that he would resign to set an example for Thai politicians, though the court has not yet ruled on the case.
Apirak said his resignation will take effect on Nov. 20 after the cremation of Princess Galyani Vadhana, the late sister of present King Bhumibol Audulyadej.
Apirak, also deputy leader of opposition Democrat Party, apologized to the people who elected him to the position. He was re-elected to the post last month by large margin after his first four-year term.
The NCCC will then forward the case to the Court.
The NCCC indictment also involved four ex-cabinet members, including ex-premier Samak Sundaravej who was Bangkok Governor before Apirak when the contract was made.
