The U.S. nuclear commitments to Japan and South Korea made the prospect of settling the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula dimmer, said a commentary carried Wednesday by the official Rodong Sinmun daily newspaper of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
The commentary blasted the U.S. defense secretary's remarks of providing Japan and South Korea with a nuclear umbrella and upgrading of nuclear weapons. It said the DPRK's development of nuclear weapons was a response to the U.S. nuclear threat.
"It is the invariable stand and principle of action of the DPRK to react to confrontation with confrontation and respond to dialogue with dialogue," the commentary said.
The commitment to provide nuclear umbrellas to Japan and South Korea revealed U.S. attempts to "make a preemptive nuclear attack on the DPRK," it added.
The denuclearization and guarantee of peace on the peninsula depend on the U.S. attitude and U.S. moves compelled the DPRK to strengthen its "military counter-measures for self-defense," the commentary said.
