Tokyo stocks close slightly higher Monday amid investors' bargain-hunting activities despite "recessionary" domestic economic data.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average edged up 60.19 points, or 0.71 percent, to 8,522.58.
The Topix index on the Tokyo Stock Exchange rose 3.58 points, or 0.42 percent, to 850.49.
On the First Section, advancing issues outnumbered declining ones 886 to 720, with 99 others remaining unchanged.
Volume leader Battery maker GS Yuasar gained 50 yen, or nearly 15 percent, to 390 yen while value leader Toyota Motor shed 10 yen, or 0.32 percent, to 3,130 yen.
Trading volume on the main section went down to 2,026.13 million shares from 2,098.21 million Friday.
The TSE's Second Section index dropped 5.03 points, or 0.25 percent, to 1,970.32 on a volume of 29.78 million shares.
