A suicide bomber on Monday blew himself up in front of the district government compound in Kandahar city, capital of Kandahar province in south Afghanistan, killing three people on the spot, said an official.

Zalmai Ayubi, spokesman of Kandahar province, told Xinhua that it occurred at around 11:30 (0700 GMT) when a suicide attacker with explosive material strapped to himself came by foot to the compound of district government and attempted breaking through security guards at the gate.

"Police stopped and fired at the bomber when he exploded himself leaving three people, two policemen and one civilian, dead," Ayubi said. "Two other policemen were also wounded in the blast."

No groups or individuals have claimed responsibility so far while Taliban insurgents fighting Afghan government have often carried out such attacks.

Spiraling conflicts and Taliban-linked insurgency have claimed over 5,000 people with more than 1,500 civilians so far this year in strife-torn Afghanistan as Taliban insurgents have vowed to intensify assaults against interests of Afghan government and international troops before the coming winter.
