Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd returned to Canberra on Monday, after attending the G20 summit in Washington, just for the inaugural Australian Council of Local Government at Parliament House to be opened on Tuesday.

More than 400 local mayors and shire presidents flew into Canberra also on Monday from around Australia for the local government meeting.

The mayors are attending a dinner on Monday evening where Local Government Minister Anthony Albanese will hand out 10 national awards ahead of the one-day meetings with Rudd government ministers.

High on the list of topics are investment in infrastructure, sustainable cities, affordable housing and the constitutional recognition of local government.
