At least 11 crew members of a small cargo ship were missing when their vessel sank off the northernmost Philippine province of Batanes after encountering badweather, the country's Coast Guard said on Wednesday.

Initial reports reaching the Philippine Coast Guard showed that at least nine crew members of the ship had been rescued, Philippine TV network GMA News reported.

The Coast Guard has sent a search-and-rescue ship for search operations.

The small cargo ship, LPT Mark Jayson, sank 20 nautical miles off Sabtang Island in the Batanes islands group.

There was no confirmation yet whether the ship is a Philippine-registered vessel or with a foreign flag.
