Sixteen crew members on board a small cargo ship that sank off northern Philippines has been rescued by Wednesday noon, the chief commander of the Philippine Coast Guard said.

Admiral Wilfredo D. Tamayo told Xinhua in a telephone interview that four people might still be missing as the coast guards are verifying the information that there are 20 people on board.

Tamayo said passing ships cooperated with coast guard rescue team in saving the 16 crew members. Two rescue ships and an islander plane has been carrying out the operation at the scene, he said.

The small cargo ship, LPT Mark Jayson, sank 20 nautical miles off Sabtang Island in the Batanes islands group late Tuesday after experiencing rough weather and strong waves.
