Visiting Belgium's Crown Prince Philippe met with Singapore leaders on Thursday, discussing cooperation and investment between the two countries.

Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde, starting their three-day visit from Wednesday, called on Singapore's President S. R. Nathan and Mrs Nathan on Thursday afternoon.

During the call, President Nathan and Prince Philippe discussed the impact of the current financial crisis and how Singapore is helping its businesses and people cope with the economic downturn, according to a statement released by Singapore's Foreign Ministry.

They also noted that Singapore and Belgium could be good investment partners for each other in their respective regions, and that both countries could explore cooperation in research and development (R&D), such as in life sciences and medical research.

In the morning, Prince Philippe met Singapore's Acting Prime Minister S. Jayakumar.

They had an exchange of views on a broad range of topics, including regional and international developments. They also discussed climate change, combating terrorism, and strengthening economic cooperation between both countries, according to the statement.

After the meetings, Prince Philippe and his delegation were hosted to an official lunch by Jayakumar.

Jayakumar said at the lunch that Singapore and Belgium are strong advocates of regional cooperation in their respective regions, so the two countries "are well-positioned to serve as a bridge across Asia and Europe."
