Seven civilians were abducted Monday by an unidentified group in the southern Philippine province of Basilan, a regional police official said Tuesday.

Chief Superintendent Bensali Jabarani, head of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao police, said the people were on a hauling truck when a group of armed men blocked them on Monday afternoon, Philippine TV network GMA News reported.

They were later taken to an undisclosed location, leaving behind the truck in the area, Jabarani said.

Jabarani said that the police are now conducting follow-up operations to rescue the victims and arrest the perpetrators.
