Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Thursday global warming was now a "formal" threat to the country's national security.
In delivering his first national security statement to the parliament, Rudd said "less attention has been given to the security implications that climate change could bring to Australia compared with other traditional threats."
"This is an area of emerging consequences which will require the formal incorporation of climate change within Australia's national security policy," he added.
Rudd also concerned about terrorism and said the government was writing a detailed policy, or white paper, on counter-terrorism tobe released next year.
The prime minister also named former Special Air Service (SAS) commander Duncan Lewis as the nation's first national security adviser who will lead "the preparation of Australia's first national security budget". Source:Xinhua
