Australians want the federal government to set an example for other countries by committing to a strong carbon reduction target, a new poll showed on Sunday.
The poll, commissioned by the Australian Conservation Foundation, showed nearly two-thirds of 1,000 respondents to an opinion poll believed Australia should set an example for other countries by committing to strong targets to reduce carbon pollution.
The government is under fire from green groups after reports suggested federal cabinet would soften its position on a 2020 reduction target and its plans for an emissions trading scheme.
Less than a third thought Australia should only commit to strong targets if other major countries agreed.
The result prompted the foundation to say Australia should be a leader, not a follower, on climate change action.
