Tokyo stocks ended higher Thursday with the key Nikkei index up 0.70 percent.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average rose 60.31 points to 8,720.55.
The Topix index went up 14.70 points, or 1.76 percent, to 849.25
On the First Section, advancing issues outnumbered declining ones 1,157 to 424, with 133 others remaining unchanged.
Value leader Toyota Motor gained 140 yen, or nearly 5 percent, to 3,070 yen while volume leader Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group increased 32 yen, or nearly 7 percent, to 500 yen.
Trading volume on the main section went up to 2,245.63 million shares from 2,146.15 million Wednesday.
The TSE's Second Section index advanced 10.95 points, or 0.57 percent, to 1,930.81 on a volume of 46.53 million shares.
On the Osaka Securities Exchange, the near-term December Nikkei225 index futures contract was up 60 points to 8,690.
