Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Saturday his government's 1.2 billion dollars (790 million U.S. dollars) funding for rail infrastructure will help make Australia's ports more efficient and generate more jobs.
Australian Associated Press quoted Rudd as saying at Port Botany in south Sydney as saying that the commitment to rail infrastructure would help ports run more productively, making exports more price competitive.
Rudd on Friday announced a total of 4.7 billion Australian dollars (3.09 billion U.S. dollars) national building plan to boost the Australian economy, including 1.2 billion dollars for the railways.
"The 1.2 billion dollars investment that we've announced for the Australian rail freight network is designed to make ports like this more efficient and more effective in getting Australian goods out to the rest of the world," he said.
