Thirteen people on board a motorboat might have been killed as the vessel capsized in high waves off the northern coast of the Philippines, the country's coast guard chief said Monday.

Coast Guard commandant Vice Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo was quoted by local media as saying that the coast guard team is verifying reports that at least 13 were killed while many others were saved after the boat sank off Aparri town of Cagayan province Sunday midnight.

Tamayo said the search-and-rescue vessel SAR-003 has been dispatched to the scene and a search aircraft is placed on standby.

Local radio reports said there were 80 people on board but it could not be immediately confirmed by the coast guard authorities.
