Tropical storm Dolphin has become a typhoon as it gained strength on its way to the Philippines, the country's weather forecast bureau said Monday. In a bulletin issued late Monday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said the typhoon was forecast to move west northwestward at nine kilometers per hour.
Packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 150 kilometers per hour, the typhoon is expected to arrive at 530 kilometers east northeast of Virac Catanduanes region.
But the state weather forecast bureau chief Prisco Nilo earlier told media that there was a small chance of Dolphin making landfall since a cold front near the South China Sea may pull the typhoon northward.
