Thailand's Foreign Ministry said Monday that it has revoked diplomatic passport held by fugitive ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
The ministry said in a statement that the ministry has revoked Thaksin's red passport on Dec. 12. It also said Thaksin had already been informed.
The statement said that the ministry has proposed to the past three governments about the revocation of Thaksin's diplomatic passport, but was able to do it only after the land deal case against him has been proceeded till the end.
The Supreme Court in October sentenced Thaksin two years in jail on corruption charges related to a downtown-Bangkok land purchase case involving Thaksin's then wife, Pojaman.
Thaksin went on exile abroad after the Sept. 19, 2006 military coup that ousted him from premiership. He returned to Thailand this February, but had to leave the country again after his wife was indicted in the land case.
After the court sentence was handed down, Britain, where Thaksin has resided, revoked his visa. Thaksin was reported to have taken shelter in Dubai.
As for how to handle with Thaksin's ordinary passport, the ministry said it has forwarded the case to the Council of State for consideration.
The ministry's statement came on the same day as Thaksin's long-time rival, Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva was elected the new Prime Minister in a special parliamentary session Monday morning, defeating the pro-Thaksin Puea Thai party candidate Pracha Promnok.
