A 6,000-strong security team, composed of the air forces and police, has been deployed to secure the safety of the Philippines' airport in Metro Manila as tens of thousands of travelers are expected to visit the archipelago during the Christmas season, local media reported Tuesday.
The assistant general manager for security of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Angel Atutubo said they have stepped up their security measures especially since the number of travelers at the NAIA had gone up to between 22,000 and 25,000 from the usual peak season flow of 18,000 to 20,000 people, the on-line news network GMA News said.
Atutubo said that airport security remained on heightened alert following the series of blasts in commercial areas in Iligan City last week that killed three and injured 47 others.
Airport officials had also imposed a firecracker ban within and around the premises of the airport, especially in residential areas. Officials said exploding firecrackers can cause serious security concerns to airplanes.
