A Thai Army officer was fatally shot by insurgents in Thailand's southern border province of Pattani Tuesday morning.

Sub-lieutenant Manoon Waealee, 50, was shot four times by a pillion rider at 8:00 a.m. (0100 GMT) while he was riding his motorcycle to work at the Ingkhayuth base in Pattani's Nongchik district, according to local newspaper The Nation's website.

Manoon died at the Nongchik hospital.

Insurgent violence in Thailand's three southernmost provinces --Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala -- has killed over 3,500 people in the region since its resurrection in January 2004.
