A search was underway for five people missing on a boat off New Zealand North Island's Bay of Plenty coast on Monday, Radio Newstalk ZB reported.

Two adults, a teenager and two children were on board the 18-foot fibreglass boat which has been missing since Monday afternoon when they went fishing from Maketu, 29 km south-east of Mount Maunganui.

Family members have told police they last heard from one of those on board via a text message indicating they were lost at sea.

Police and three coast-guard vessels were searching for the people off the coast of Maketu.

The weather was deteriorating, with swells reaching 1.5 meters and winds rising to 16 knots.
