Investing and staying competitive in education are key and Singaporeans should not compromise on children's education even as things are getting tough in 2009, Singapore leaders said in different occasions on Saturday.
According to Channel newsasia's report, Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong Saturday attended a ceremony giving out some 170 Edusave scholarships in Ang Mo Kio. He said the government encourages families to look after their kids and not to compromise on their education.
"If you need any help, come to see us," the Prime Minister said.
In another scholarship presentation at the Marine Parade Constituency on Saturday afternoon, the country's Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong made similar statements.
According to Channel newsasia's report, Goh said as things remain uncertain in the next few years, investing in education is key.
"Because education broadens our knowledge, education allows us to learn more skills. When you have the skills and you've got the knowledge, you have the whole world of jobs before you. So when the economy recovers, those with better education and skills will stand a better chance of getting a job," the Senior Minister said.
"We want our children to go as far as they can go because from the data that we have, generally there is a correlation between your level of education and your pay package," said Goh.
On Friday, thousands of Singapore students, from kindergarten to secondary levels, return to schools for the new semester.
