Singapore Saturday launched commemorative coins featuring the image of ox to celebrate the upcoming Chinese new year.

The Singapore Mint Saturday introduced the latest coin series on its website, saying that the design is inspired by the Chinese characters "Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branches", which are inscribed as motifs on the coins. A peony, a traditional Chinese symbol of blessings, is emblazoned on the oxen's body, brings well wishes of hope and happiness in the New Year.

The Singapore Mint said the design adds an oriental flair and celebrates the endearing virtues of the ox, which are leadership, honour and compassion.

The coin series are being displayed at Suntec City Mall as part of the annual Lunar New Year Retail Fair, which will end on Jan. 11.
